The Jackson County Animal Shelter is slashing the fee for adopting a dog during its All American Summer Dog Adoption event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The adoption fee for all dogs ages 6 months and older will drop from $150 to $50. There also is a $25 dog license fee.
The animal shelter is at 5595 S. Pacific Highway between Phoenix and Talent. Appointments aren’t necessary.
Though all dogs age 6 months and older are eligible for the discounted adoption fee, the shelter and Friends of the Animal Shelter volunteer group are emphasizing dogs that have been at the shelter for a long time while awaiting a home.
During the weekend event, adopters must still go through the standard application process and meet screening requirements.
The available shelter dogs have been screened for temperament and health issues and determined to be adoptable companions. All adopted dogs are spayed and neutered, microchipped and vaccinated prior to going to their new homes. A collar and leash are included for each dog.
The shelter is at capacity for housing dogs due to the combination of a slowdown in adoptions during the past six months and a recent surge in the number of dogs entering the shelter as strays. After a surge of pet adoptions during the earlier days of the COVID-19 pandemic, shelters across the nation are seeing a drop-off in adoptions and an increase in abandoned dogs.
The weekend event is made possible by Friends of the Animal Shelter, which is covering the cost of the discounts and providing volunteers to help run the event.
