What counts as a paid or fake review?

A review is not compliant just because it looks natural. Google says reviews should reflect an actual experience and be genuine and unbiased.

Google's policy prohibits reviews or ratings paid for directly or in kind. It also prohibits offering discounts, free goods, services, or other incentives in exchange for writing, changing, or removing a review. Asking someone to post content that does not reflect their real experience is also not allowed.

Practice Policy-safe? Why
Asking a customer to share an honest review after a real experience Yes The review reflects their own experience and is not incentivized
Paying someone to post a review No Paid reviews are fake engagement under Google's policy
Offering a discount for a review No Incentives for reviews, edits, or removals are prohibited
Asking only happy customers to leave a review No Selectively soliciting positive reviews is not allowed
Asking a customer to revise or remove a negative review for a reward No Incentives tied to review changes or removal are prohibited

Read Google's Maps content policy on fake engagement for the full rules. The exact policy wording can change, so check the current source before making decisions.

What can happen to your Business Profile?

Google may remove reviews that violate its policies. Google also says businesses found to have fake or incentivized review activity may face restrictions on their Business Profile.

Possible restrictions listed by Google include a temporary block on receiving new reviews, existing reviews being unpublished for a period, or a warning shown to consumers that fake reviews were removed. These are possible outcomes, not a prediction of what will happen to any particular profile.

Google's Business Profile restrictions guide explains these actions and how an owner can appeal a restriction. A seller's promise that reviews are permanent or guaranteed cannot override Google's review policies or systems.

Bottom line: Do not risk your customer trust or profile standing for a number that may be removed.

Is it allowed to ask customers for reviews?

Yes. You can ask real customers to leave an honest review without offering an incentive or trying to control what they say. Google allows businesses to encourage reviews based on genuine experiences.

The request should be neutral. Do not tell customers to give a particular star rating, include specific words, or change a negative review. Do not ask only customers you expect to be pleased.

Google's review guidance for businesses explains how to share a review link and how to invite feedback in a way that follows its rules.

How to request honest Google reviews

Make it easy to leave feedback, then let each customer decide what to say. Google lets eligible Business Profile owners create and share a review link.

  1. Open your Business Profile controls and find the option to get more reviews.
  2. Copy the review link Google provides.
  3. Share it after a genuine customer interaction, such as in a thank-you email, chat, or receipt.
  4. Use neutral wording. Ask for an honest review, not a positive one.
  5. Reply professionally to feedback, including criticism, without offering a reward for edits or removal.

Google's help page describes these steps and notes that reviews must reflect genuine experiences. For your wider social campaign planning, see our guide to choosing the right service for a campaign. If you have a question about an existing order on this site, check the FAQ or contact support.

What to do if you already bought reviews

Stop any further paid or incentivized review activity. Do not ask reviewers to post additional content, change ratings, or remove reviews in exchange for a benefit.

Review Google's current policy and Business Profile restrictions information. If Google notifies you about an action, follow its official instructions and appeal process. Avoid services or advisers promising guaranteed reinstatement or permanent reviews.

If you suspect a review is policy-violating, Google's review reporting guidance explains how to flag it. Google says only reviews that violate policy are eligible for removal, so a negative opinion by itself is not grounds to request deletion.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay someone to leave a Google review?
No. Google prohibits reviews or ratings paid for directly or in kind. Reviews must reflect genuine customer experiences.

Can I offer a discount for a review?
No. Google prohibits incentives in exchange for posting, changing, or removing a review.

Can I ask customers to leave a Google review?
Yes. You may invite customers to share an honest review of a real experience, without pressure, incentives, or instructions about the rating or wording.

Can I ask only satisfied customers for reviews?
No. Google's guidance says businesses should not selectively solicit positive reviews. Invite feedback neutrally.

Can Google remove paid reviews?
Google says fake or policy-violating reviews may be removed. It may also apply restrictions to a Business Profile in cases of fake or incentivized review activity.

What if a negative review is false?
Report it only if it violates Google's policies. Google says a review is eligible for removal when it breaks policy, not simply because the business disagrees with it.

Where can I get an official review link?
Use the review-link option in your Business Profile controls. Google's review guidance explains how to find and share it.

Bottom line

Do not buy Google reviews. Invite real customers to share honest feedback without rewards or pressure, and use Google's own review link. That builds a record you can stand behind.
