The 30 second version

  • Local ranking decides which shops appear when someone searches for a service near them.
  • Google has said it looks at relevance, distance and prominence.
  • A complete business profile, consistent details and honest reviews do most of the work.
  • Fake reviews and fake locations can get a listing suspended.
  • Your social pages support the profile, they do not replace it.

What local ranking means

When someone types "tailor near me" or "dentist in Indiranagar", the results are not the same for every person. The search engine considers what the person is looking for, how close each business is, and how well known and trusted the business seems. These are the three factors Google describes publicly: relevance, distance and prominence.

You cannot change where your shop is, but you can improve how clearly and credibly it is described.

Setup checklist

  1. Claim your business profile. Search for your shop and follow the steps to verify ownership.
  2. Choose the right main category. Pick the one that best describes what you do, then add secondary ones only if they are true.
  3. Fill every field. Name, address, phone number, opening hours, website, services and a short description.
  4. Use your real business name. Adding extra keywords to the name goes against the guidelines and can cause problems.
  5. Add photos. Shop front, inside, products, team. Use your own pictures.
  6. Keep details identical everywhere. The same name, address and phone number on your website, social pages and directories.
  7. Post updates. Offers, new arrivals and holiday hours show that the business is active.

Reviews: ask, reply, never fake

Reviews are a big part of prominence. Ask happy customers after a completed job, send them the review link on WhatsApp, and thank everyone who writes one. Reply politely to negative reviews with facts and an offer to fix the problem.

Do not buy reviews, trade them in groups or write your own. Platforms prohibit this, and removed reviews or a suspended profile hurt more than a slow start.

Quick comparison: what helps and what harms

Helps Harms
Accurate category and hours Keyword stuffing in the business name
Own photos and regular updates Stock images that do not match the shop
Real customer reviews Bought or self-written reviews
Same details across the web Different phone numbers on different pages
A simple local page on your site Dozens of near-identical city pages

Where social media fits

Customers often check your Instagram or Facebook before they visit. A tidy profile with recent photos builds trust, and tagging your location helps people find you. A small boost can make a new page look less empty, and our Instagram marketing guide covers how to build the page up properly. If you want to see how a trial behaves first, the free trial page lists what is available, one claim per person per offer, using only your public link.

Be clear about the limits. Purchased followers do not bring walk-in customers by themselves, and they can drop over time. Customers come from useful posts, clear contact details and good service. For general questions about how orders work, see the FAQ.

A monthly routine that stays manageable

  • Reply to every new review.
  • Add three to five fresh photos.
  • Post one offer or update.
  • Check that hours and phone number are still correct.
  • Search for your own service from a nearby spot and note where you appear.

Fifteen minutes a month beats a big push once a year.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local ranking take to improve? There is no fixed time. Many shops see changes within weeks after fixing an incomplete profile, but results depend on competition in your area.

Do I need a website for local ranking? A website helps, but a complete and verified business profile is the first step. Add a simple site when you can.

Can I change my ranking by buying reviews? No. Fake reviews break platform rules and can lead to removal or suspension. Ask real customers instead.

Do Instagram followers affect my map ranking? Not directly. Social pages support trust and discovery, but map ranking is based on the profile, reviews and location signals.

Should I list multiple shops at one address? Only if they are genuinely separate businesses with their own staff and signage. Duplicate listings can be removed.
