Why Did My SoundCloud Plays Drop?
SoundCloud play counts can change because Insights may be cached, self-plays are not counted, or fake activity is removed. Here is what to check.

Why can SoundCloud plays look lower?
A lower-looking play count may be a display or timing issue, a self-play that was not counted, or activity SoundCloud later removed. First check the Insights Overview page, then compare the same track and time range before assuming plays were lost.
SoundCloud's Insights troubleshooting guide says track pages and profiles can show cached Insights. It recommends checking track stats in the Insights Overview page for the most accurate view.
SoundCloud also says it may remove interactions from accounts it identifies as fake. That can make activity look different after review. The platform's monetization terms separately explain that it may exclude artificial or fraudulent plays from revenue and remove or reset affected play counts for monetized content.
Check which SoundCloud stat you are viewing
Compare like with like: the same track, the same account, and the same reporting period. A track page, profile display, and Insights Overview may not update at the same time because of caching.
Use this quick check:
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Track page looks behind | Open the track in Insights Overview and refresh the page |
| Profile total differs from a track | Compare the same track and date range instead of a profile-wide total |
| A short-period summary changed | Confirm that you are comparing the same time window |
| Your own test play did not change the total | Check whether you were signed into the account that owns the track |
Do not compare one track's lifetime total with a short Insights reporting window. They answer different questions, even if both are labelled as plays.
Does playing your own track count?
SoundCloud says it does not count self-plays when you are signed in to your account. Replaying your own track while logged in is not a reliable way to test whether the counter is updating.
The SoundCloud Help Center suggests checking the play while signed out, then signing back in to review the count. Use that only to troubleshoot your own track, and do not repeatedly generate plays to inflate a number.
Can SoundCloud remove plays?
Yes, SoundCloud says activity from accounts it identifies as fake may be removed. Its Help Center says those accounts can follow, play, like, or repost tracks, and that their interactions may be deleted when the accounts are removed.
If your track is part of SoundCloud's Monetization Program, read the terms before using any promotion. The terms prohibit causing automated, artificial, or fraudulent plays and prohibit paying or offering consideration to others to access your music on the platform. SoundCloud says it may exclude affected plays from revenue and may remove plays or reset the count.
That rule is specifically stated for participation in SoundCloud Monetization. A service listing cannot change SoundCloud's platform terms or guarantee how the platform will treat a play.
What to do when the count changes
Use the platform's own troubleshooting steps before drawing a conclusion. Work through these checks in order:
- Open Insights Overview. Compare the track's stats there with the public track page.
- Refresh the display. SoundCloud says cached data can make a page look out of date.
- Check the account used for testing. Self-plays made while signed in are not counted.
- Review recent activity. If there was a sudden spike or suspicious activity, SoundCloud recommends blocking and reporting suspected fake accounts.
- Keep records. Note the track URL, the time you checked, and which display or reporting period differed.
- Read the applicable terms. If you participate in monetization, do not use paid or artificial play activity to influence the count.
SoundCloud's Help Center says it cannot adjust or revert play counts when discussing suspicious activity. Do not assume support can manually restore a number.
If the change relates to a service order, keep the order code and check it through the site's tracking page. The SoundCloud services listing shows the available service types, but the platform's terms still apply. In particular, do not use purchased plays for tracks in the Monetization Program.
Important: If a track is monetized, follow SoundCloud's monetization terms first. A higher displayed count is not worth risking eligible revenue or the track's standing.

If your track is monetized, follow SoundCloud's terms and do not pay for plays. For a service order, check the order status and read the listing carefully before acting.
