Shares are the paper plane icon on Instagram, when someone sends your Reel or post to a friend or their Story. This page lets you try free Instagram shares on any public Reel or post.

A share is counted when someone taps the paper plane under a post or on a Reel and sends it, either in a direct message or to their own Story. Instagram now shows a share count on many Reels next to likes and comments, and you can always see shares in your post Insights.

Shares are different from saves. A save keeps the post for the person who saved it. A share passes it on to someone else. Both show in Insights, but they are separate numbers and separate services on this site.

Many creators watch shares closely because a share means a viewer liked the post enough to put their own name next to it when sending it on. That makes shares a useful sign of which topics your audience cares about.

Free share trials on this page

Share numbers can take time to update in Insights. They also show to the public only on some posts, depending on what Instagram displays at the time, so check Insights for the most complete number.

Making posts people want to send

People share content that says something for them. Relatable jokes, useful checklists, local news, and posts that tag a type of person (for example, send this to your gym buddy) are shared often on Instagram. Carousels with a list of tips are easy to send because the friend gets the full value in one place.

Keep the main idea clear in the first frame, add text so it works on mute, and avoid long captions that hide the point. Ask for a share only when it fits, such as a post meant for a friend.

Check which of your past posts got the most shares in Insights, then look for what they had in common. It might be a format, a topic or a style of caption. Make more of that.
