Do YouTube Tags Help Your Videos Get More Views?

Barely. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and mainly help with misspellings. Here is what to focus on instead, and how to use tags sensibly.

The 30 second version

  • YouTube's own Help Center says tags play a minimal role in helping viewers find your video.
  • Tags are mainly useful when your topic or a name is commonly misspelled.
  • Title, thumbnail and description matter far more for discovery.
  • Add a few accurate tags, then spend your time on the video itself.
  • Never use unrelated or misleading tags. YouTube's spam policies prohibit them.

What YouTube actually says about tags

Old YouTube tutorials often treated tags as a ranking secret, with advice to fill all 500 characters. YouTube's current guidance is very different. Its Help Center explains that tags can be useful if content in your video is commonly misspelled, and that otherwise tags play a minimal role in helping viewers find your video. It also says the title, thumbnail and description are more important pieces of metadata.

In other words, if you are spending more time on tags than on your first 30 seconds, you have the priorities upside down.

When tags are worth adding

Situation Sensible tag use
A name people often spell differently Add the common spelling variants, for example a Hindi word written several ways in English
A product or model name Add the exact name and common short form
A topic known by two names Add the second name if it is not in your title
Your title and description already describe the video clearly A few tags are enough, or none

For Indian creators, spelling variants are the most useful case. People type Hinglish words in many ways ("kaise", "kese", "kaisay"), and a couple of variant tags can help those searches match your video.

What matters more than tags

  1. Topic. Make videos people are actually looking for. Search the topic on YouTube and look at the suggestions as you type.
  2. Title. Say clearly what the video gives the viewer, in the words they would use. Do not promise what the video does not deliver.
  3. Thumbnail. Make the subject clear at a glance on a small phone screen. Keep it honest.
  4. Description. Explain the video in natural sentences in the first two lines. Add chapters with timestamps.
  5. The opening. Confirm quickly that the viewer is in the right place, then deliver. Early drop off hurts how widely a video is shown.

YouTube has said that search considers how well the title, description and content match the query, and how viewers engage with the video for that search. Recommendations depend heavily on whether viewers watch and are satisfied.

How to add tags

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Content.
  2. Select the video and open Details.
  3. Click Show more and find the Tags field.
  4. Type each tag and press Enter or a comma.
  5. Save.

Keep the list short and accurate. Repeating your title five ways or adding popular unrelated channel names does not help, and misleading metadata can count as spam under YouTube's policies.

Did your tags make a difference?

Probably not much, and you cannot easily tell. Views change because of topic, timing, thumbnail, title and audience response. If you change tags and views go up, something else likely caused it. To learn what works, look in YouTube Studio at Traffic source and YouTube search terms for each video, and compare similar videos over similar time periods.

Frequently asked questions

Do YouTube tags help with SEO? Only a little. YouTube says tags play a minimal role, mainly helping with misspellings.

How many tags should I use? There is no magic number. A handful of accurate tags is plenty for most videos.

Should I copy tags from popular videos? No. Use tags that describe your video. Unrelated tags can be treated as misleading metadata.

Are hashtags the same as tags? No. Hashtags go in the title or description and are visible to viewers. Tags are hidden metadata.

What is more important than tags? Your title, thumbnail, description and how well the video holds viewers in the first minute.
