Can You Replace a YouTube Video After Uploading?
No. YouTube does not let you swap the video file and keep the same link. Here is what you can edit in Studio, and what to do if you must upload again.

The 30 second version
- YouTube does not let you replace the video file behind an existing link. A new upload always gets a new URL.
- The new upload starts at zero: no views, likes, comments or watch time carry over.
- Many fixes do not need a new upload: title, description, thumbnail, visibility, trims, blurs and some audio changes can be done in Studio.
- If you must upload again, update every place that uses the old link and point viewers to the new video.
- Think twice before deleting the original if it has views, embeds or active campaigns.
Why YouTube does not allow file replacement
Each upload on YouTube is its own video with its own ID and URL. YouTube's help pages are clear that any new upload gets a new URL. This protects viewers: a video they liked or commented on cannot quietly turn into something else.
So if the footage or audio is wrong, you have two choices: fix it with Studio's editing tools, or upload a corrected copy as a separate video.
What you can change without uploading again
| Problem | Fix in YouTube Studio | Same URL? |
|---|---|---|
| Typo in title or description | Edit details | Yes |
| Wrong or weak thumbnail | Upload a new thumbnail | Yes |
| Wrong visibility (public, unlisted, private) | Change visibility | Yes |
| Unwanted section at the start, middle or end | Editor: Trim and cut | Yes |
| Face, number plate or object that should be hidden | Editor: Blur | Yes |
| Music claim or audio problem | Editor: remove or replace audio, or mute a section | Yes |
| Wrong end screen or missing cards | Add or edit end screens and cards | Yes |
| Missing chapters | Add timestamps in the description | Yes |
| Completely wrong or broken file | Upload a new video | No, new URL |
To use the editor, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, select the video and choose Editor from the left menu. Edits to long videos can take some time to process, and the original stays live until processing finishes.
If you have to upload a new version
- Make a list of where the old link is used: your website, Instagram bio, WhatsApp messages, playlists, pinned comments, emails and any paid promotions or orders.
- Upload the corrected video and check it fully before sharing.
- Update every link on your list.
- Point viewers from the old video to the new one, using a pinned comment, a note at the top of the description and a card.
- Decide what to do with the original: keep it, make it unlisted or private, or delete it. Deleting breaks every old link and embed.
Remember that the new video will not inherit the old one's views or comments. If the original was performing well and the mistake is small, a pinned comment correcting the error may be better than starting again.
If a promotion or order is running on the old link
A new upload is a different target. Any ad, promotion or service order set up for the old URL will not move to the new one by itself. Contact the support team with your order reference before changing anything, rather than placing a second order on the new link. Our guide to which link to use for an order explains why the exact target matters on every platform.
Avoiding the problem next time
- Upload as Private or Unlisted first and watch it fully before making it public.
- Check audio levels and captions on your phone, where most viewers watch.
- Use Schedule so you have time to review before it goes live.
Getting a video right the first time protects its early views. If you want to give a corrected video a start, you can see our YouTube views options, but a well titled, well edited video is what keeps viewers watching.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a YouTube video and keep the views? No. A new upload is a separate video and starts with zero views.
Can I fix a mistake without re-uploading? Often yes. Studio lets you trim, cut, blur and change audio on the existing video.
Will trimming a video reset its views? No. Edits made in the Studio editor keep the same video, link and stats.
Should I delete the old video? Only if you are sure nobody needs it. Deleting breaks all old links and embeds. Making it unlisted is a softer option.
Can I change a video's thumbnail after posting? Yes, as long as your account has custom thumbnails enabled, which usually requires phone verification.
