How to find keywords for your website, step by step
A practical method to find the search phrases your customers actually use, using free tools and your own customer questions.

The 30 second version
- A keyword is simply the phrase a person types into Google.
- Start from customer questions, not from tools. Tools then help you check and expand.
- Choose phrases that match one clear page and one clear intent.
- Pick a mix: a few broad phrases and many specific ones.
Start with your customers, not a tool
The best ideas come from conversations. Open your WhatsApp, call log and email and list the questions customers ask. "Do you deliver to Noida?", "How long does GST filing take?", "Which plan suits a small shop?" Each one is a possible page and a possible search.
If you run a shop or service, also check your own search box, product names and the words customers use in reviews. Real words beat clever words.
Step by step method
- Write 20 customer questions in plain language.
- Type each one into Google and read the suggestions that appear as you type.
- Scroll to the "People also ask" box and the related searches at the bottom. Note them down.
- Open the top three results and see what the page is about. This tells you what the searcher wanted.
- Use a free keyword tool or Google's own planner to see rough demand.
- Group similar phrases together and assign each group to one page.
- Pick one main phrase per page and a few supporting phrases.
Understand search intent
| Intent | Example search | Page type that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Learn | how does GST registration work | Guide or blog post |
| Compare | best accounting software for small shop | Comparison page |
| Buy or hire | accountant in Jaipur | Service page |
| Find a place | dentist near me | Local page with map and address |
If the results are all guides and you write a sales page, you will struggle to rank. Match the page to the intent.
Short phrases versus long phrases
Short phrases like "digital marketing" have huge competition. Long phrases like "digital marketing for small clothing shop in Surat" have fewer searches but better match and are easier to rank for. New sites usually do better by starting with the long ones.
Where to place the keywords
- The page title and the main heading
- The first paragraph, said naturally
- A few subheadings
- The web address, kept short and readable
Do not repeat the phrase in every sentence. Write for a reader, and let the keyword appear where it fits.
