Track SEO ranking: simple methods that give honest numbers
How to track SEO ranking without confusing tools: what to measure, free ways to check positions and how to read changes sensibly.

The 30 second version
- Tracking SEO ranking means watching where your pages appear for the searches you care about.
- Google Search Console gives you free, reliable average positions.
- A one off search in your own browser is misleading because results change by person and place.
- Watch trends over weeks, not daily wobble.
- Rankings are a means. Clicks, enquiries and sales are the goal.
Why checking by hand fools you
It is tempting to type your keyword into Google and see where you are. The trouble is that search results are personalised. Your location, past searches and device change what you see. Someone in another city may see a different order. So a manual check tells you roughly whether you exist, not your true position.
For honest numbers, use data that averages over many real searches.
Method 1: Google Search Console
This is free and shows what Google reports about your own site.
- Add and verify your site in Search Console.
- Open the Performance report.
- Look at queries, clicks, impressions and average position.
- Filter by a single page to see which phrases bring it traffic.
- Compare two date ranges to see movement.
Average position is a mix of everything people saw. A value of 8.4 does not mean you are number 8 every time. It means across all showings you averaged around that place.
Method 2: A simple tracking sheet
Make a spreadsheet with columns for the phrase, the page, the date, impressions, clicks and average position. Update it every two weeks from Search Console. This takes ten minutes and shows direction clearly. Colour the cells green when numbers improve and red when they fall.
Method 3: Free and paid rank trackers
Dedicated trackers check chosen phrases from a set location on a schedule. They are useful if you target a specific city or have many pages. Many have limited free plans. Treat them as a second opinion, since each tool uses its own settings and numbers will differ slightly from Search Console.
| Method | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Free | Real averages for your own site |
| Tracking sheet | Free | Seeing direction over time |
| Rank tracker tool | Free tier or paid | Specific phrases and cities |
| Manual search | Free | A quick sanity check only |
How to read the changes
- A small drop for a few days is normal. Search results move all the time.
- A large, sudden fall across many pages deserves investigation: check for site errors, a robots change or a recent update to your pages.
- Impressions rising while position holds steady usually means you are being shown for more searches, which is good.
- If position improves but clicks do not, your title may not be attractive. Rewrite it.
Always judge by a few weeks of data. Avoid changing pages every day in reaction to a number.
Track what matters beyond position
Ranking first for a phrase nobody buys on is not a win. Add these to your sheet:
- Clicks from search.
- Enquiries, calls or orders that came from those visits.
- The pages that bring the most valuable visitors.
If you sell through social platforms as well, the same discipline applies there: track follower growth, reach and enquiries, not only raw totals.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trusting one manual search.
- Checking every day and reacting to noise.
- Comparing numbers from two tools as if they should match.
- Chasing position for phrases that never lead to a sale.
- Forgetting to note when you changed a page, so you cannot link cause and effect.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free way to track SEO ranking? Google Search Console. It shows average position, clicks and impressions for your own site at no cost.
Why does my rank differ from a friend's? Search results are personalised by location, device and history, so two people can see different orders.
How often should I check? Every one to two weeks is enough. Daily checking mostly shows normal fluctuation.
Does a higher position always mean more traffic? Not always. The phrase also needs enough searches and your title needs to attract the click.
Can buying followers improve my ranking? No. Social followers do not change where a website appears in search results.
