The 30 second version

  • SEO basic interview questions usually test whether you understand the basics and can explain them simply.
  • Expect questions on keywords, on page work, links, technical checks and measuring results.
  • Short, honest answers with one example beat memorised definitions.
  • Never promise rankings in an answer. Interviewers notice that.
  • Build a small practice site to show what you have actually done.

How to prepare

These SEO basic interview questions come up again and again. Interviewers at agencies and in-house teams want to see that you can think, not just recite. For each answer below, add one example from a site you have worked on or a practice site you built. Practical experience, even small, stands out.

Question 1: What is SEO?

Search engine optimisation is the work of improving a website so that it can be found in search results by people looking for what it offers. It covers technical health, content and trust signals such as links.

Question 2: What is the difference between on page and off page SEO?

On page covers what you control on the site: content, titles, headings, links between pages and speed. Off page covers signals from outside the site, mainly links from other websites and brand mentions.

Question 3: What is a keyword and how do you choose one?

A keyword is a phrase people type into a search engine. You choose by thinking about what customers would say, checking what already ranks, and matching the phrase to what the page really offers. Longer, specific phrases are usually a better start for new sites.

Question 4: What is search intent?

It is the purpose behind a search: to learn, to compare, to do something or to buy. A page should match the intent, otherwise it will struggle even if the words match.

Question 6: What is a meta description?

A short summary of the page that may appear under the title in search results. It does not directly raise rankings, but it can affect how many people click.

Question 7: What is a sitemap and what is robots.txt?

A sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find. A robots.txt file tells crawlers which areas they should not visit. Mistakes in robots.txt can accidentally block important pages, so check it carefully.

Question 8: How do you measure SEO?

Through search impressions, clicks, average position, organic visits, conversions such as calls or enquiries, and the number of pages indexed. Google Search Console and analytics tools are the usual sources.

Question 9: What is a canonical tag?

It tells search engines which version of a page is the preferred one when similar content exists at more than one address. It helps avoid duplicate content confusion.

Question 10: What would you do if a page lost traffic?

Check whether it is a real drop or normal variation. Look at Search Console for changes in impressions and position, review any recent edits or technical errors, and compare with competing pages. Then fix the cause rather than guessing.

Quick self test

Topic Can you explain it in two sentences?
Search intent Yes or no
Title and heading structure Yes or no
Internal linking Yes or no
Core page speed ideas Yes or no
Reading Search Console Yes or no

If any answer is no, spend an evening on that topic.

Showing practical work

Build a small site on a topic you know, add it to Search Console, publish a few pages and record what you see after a month. Even simple notes show initiative. If you manage a small social profile as well, mention it honestly. Social media and SEO are different skills, though they support each other: a good profile can help people trust a brand after they find it. You can read how we approach this on our Instagram marketing page, and the blog has other plain guides. If you want to see how a free trial works for practice, the free boosts page shows the rules: public link only, each offer once per person.

Be careful not to claim that follower counts improve rankings. They are not a known ranking factor.

Interview habits that help

  • Ask a clarifying question before answering a broad one.
  • Say "I would check" when you do not know, then explain how.
  • Avoid guarantees such as "I can get you to page one".
  • Bring a one page summary of something you improved, with before and after numbers if you have them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certificate to get an SEO job? Not necessarily. Certificates can help, but practical examples and clear thinking matter more to most interviewers.

Which tools should I know? Google Search Console and an analytics tool are the essentials. Familiarity with a crawler and a keyword research tool is a bonus.

Should I learn coding? Basic HTML helps you read titles, headings and links. Deep programming is not required for entry level roles.

What if I am asked about the latest algorithm update? Be honest about what you know. Explain that you follow official announcements and focus on helpful content and technical health.

How do I answer a question I do not know? Say so, then describe how you would find out. Honesty and a clear method impress interviewers.
