The 30 second version
- Website search engine optimization is the work of making your site easy for search engines to understand and useful for people.
- For a new site, do the foundations first: working pages, clear structure, fast loading and tracking.
- Then publish helpful content for the phrases your customers actually search.
- Results take months, not days, and no one can promise a position.
- Social media can bring visitors, but it does not replace SEO.
Step 1: Make sure the site can be found
Before anything else, check that search engines are allowed to visit your pages and that your site has a sitemap. Add your site to Google Search Console, which is free, and submit the sitemap. This tells you which pages are indexed and flags errors.
Also check the basics that new sites often miss: the site works with https, there is one version of the address (with or without www), and the pages load without errors.
Step 2: Plan a simple structure
Think of your site as a small library with clear shelves.
- A home page that says what you do and for whom.
- One page for each main service or product.
- A contact page with your address, phone number and hours if you serve a local area.
- A blog or guides section for questions customers ask.
Link these pages to each other with descriptive link text so both visitors and search engines see how they connect.
Step 3: Write for real searches
For each page, pick one main phrase that describes it in the words your customers use. Write a clear title, a helpful opening paragraph and sections that answer the likely follow-up questions. Include your city or area if you serve one. Avoid copying text from other sites; unique, useful writing is what you are aiming for.
Step 4: Speed and mobile
Most people in India browse on phones. Test your pages on a mobile connection. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and keep text readable without zooming. A page that loads quickly keeps visitors from leaving.
Step 5: Track what happens
Set up analytics so you can see visits, sources and the pages people read. Keep a monthly note of searches, clicks and enquiries. Without tracking you cannot tell what is working.
A realistic first 90 days
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Setup: Search Console, analytics, sitemap, fix errors |
| 3 to 4 | Core pages: home, services, contact, with proper titles |
| 5 to 8 | Publish four to six helpful guides or location pages |
| 9 to 12 | Review data, improve weak titles, add internal links |
Local businesses
If you serve a city or a neighbourhood, claim a Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere, and ask satisfied customers for honest reviews. These steps often matter as much as anything on the website.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying text from competitors.
- Stuffing one phrase into every sentence.
- Publishing many thin pages with nothing useful in them.
- Buying link packages hoping for a quick jump.
- Giving up after six weeks. SEO rewards patience and consistency.
What to do when you feel stuck
Look at what appears for your target phrase and ask what those pages offer that yours does not. Often the gap is clear: a missing explanation, an example or a better layout. Improve one page at a time.
Frequently asked questions
How long before a new website shows in Google? Pages can be indexed within days or weeks, but ranking well for competitive phrases usually takes months of steady work.
Do I need to hire an SEO expert? Not for the basics. A specialist helps when you have technical problems or heavy competition.
Is a blog necessary? Not always, but helpful guides give you more chances to appear for the questions customers ask.
Does social media help SEO? Social profiles can bring visitors and build trust, but follower counts are not a known ranking factor for a website.
What is the most important first step? Setting up Search Console and analytics, because they show you what is really happening.
