Facebook Page vs Group: Which Does Your Business Need?

A Page is your public business profile; a Group is a community where members talk to each other. Here is what each is for and how to use both together.

The 30 second version

  • A Facebook Page is the official public profile of your business: details, updates, reviews, messages and ads.
  • A Facebook Group is a space where members talk to each other about a shared interest.
  • Start with a Page. Add a Group only if your customers have a real reason to talk to each other and you can moderate it.
  • Page followers and Group members are different audiences. Do not compare the numbers as if they were the same.
  • Many businesses use both: the Page as the front door, the Group as the community room.

When a Page is the right choice

Every business that uses Facebook should have a Page. It is what people find when they search your name, and it is what Meta's business tools (ads, Business Suite, Instagram linking) are built around.

Use your Page to:

  • Show your address, hours, phone number, WhatsApp button and website.
  • Post updates, offers, events, photos and videos.
  • Reply to messages and comments.
  • Collect reviews and recommendations.
  • Run ads and boosted posts.

Keep the details current. A Page with old hours or a dead phone number does more harm than having no Page at all.

When a Group is worth adding

A Group makes sense when customers benefit from talking to each other, not just to you. Examples:

  • A fitness studio with a members' group for workout questions and challenges.
  • A coaching or course business with a student community.
  • A plant shop with a group where buyers share care tips and photos.
  • A local residents' or parents' community connected to your service.

A Group needs care. Write simple rules, choose moderators, approve members if needed and reply to questions. An empty Group with unanswered posts sends the wrong signal.

Privacy in Groups

Groups can be public (anyone can see posts) or private (only members can see posts). A private group can still be visible in search so people can request to join. Explain the privacy level in your Group description so members know who can read what. Never encourage members to share personal details like phone numbers or addresses in posts.

Using a Page and Group together

Facebook lets a Page create a Group and post in it as the Page. A simple setup:

  1. Build a complete Page with accurate business information.
  2. Create a Group as the Page, with a clear purpose and rules.
  3. Link the Group from the Page and invite interested customers, not everyone.
  4. Use the Page for announcements and the Group for discussion.
  5. Assign at least one person to look after the Group each day.

Which number should you watch?

Page likes and followers show how many people chose to keep up with your business. Group members show how many joined a conversation. Neither number alone tells you if the business is growing. Watch messages, calls, bookings and repeat customers.

If your Page looks empty while you build it up, our guide to Facebook page likes in India covers honest ways to grow it, and you can compare Facebook page likes services if you want a starting base. Regular, useful posts are still what keep people following.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business have both a Page and a Group? Yes, and the Page can create and manage the Group.

Is a Group better for reach than a Page? Not as a rule. Active Groups often get strong engagement from members, but they take time to moderate. A Page is still the base for any business.

Can I run ads from a Group? No. Ads run from a Page. Groups have no ad tools.

Should my Group be public or private? Private suits communities where members share personal experiences. Public suits open discussion where you want anyone to read along.

Do Page followers automatically join my Group? No. They are separate audiences. Invite followers who would genuinely value the Group.
