Instagram does not use one algorithm. Reels recommendations are personalised: Instagram predicts what each viewer may watch, enjoy, like or share, then ranks eligible videos for that person. No posting trick can ensure a place in recommendations.

This guide explains the public signals, what creators in India can check, and a practical way to improve the next Reel without chasing rumours.

How does Instagram rank Reels?

Instagram first finds eligible Reels that may suit a viewer, then orders them by predicted interest. The system uses several signals, not a single score that creators can see or control. A Reel can reach people who do not follow you, but recommendation eligibility does not guarantee distribution.

Instagram says Reels are designed for discovery and entertainment. Its public explanation describes predictions such as whether someone will watch through, reshare, like, or visit the audio page. The system also considers the viewer's recent activity, interactions with the creator, information about the Reel, and information about the creator.

That means the same Reel can rank differently for two people. One viewer watches Marathi cooking videos; another spends time on Hindi comedy. Their recommendations need not match.

What signals matter for Reels?

Think in four groups. You cannot see Instagram's complete ranking formula, and the company does not publish fixed weights.

Signal group What Instagram says it can consider What you can do
Viewer activity Reels a person recently watched, liked, saved, shared or commented on Make the topic clear so interested viewers recognise it
Viewer and creator history Whether the viewer has interacted with the creator before Reply naturally to relevant comments and build a recognisable subject area
Reel information Video content, audio and popularity signals Use clear visuals and relevant spoken or on-screen context
Creator information Signals including popularity and engagement Publish original work that gives viewers a reason to return

Watch time and meaningful sharing are useful ways to assess whether your video served its audience. But do not confuse a useful creator metric with a certain way to improve recommendations. Instagram does not promise that a particular retention percentage, like count or upload time will push a Reel to more people.

Why does a Reel reach non-followers?

Instagram may recommend eligible public content to people who do not follow its creator. Instagram for Creators has described a process in which eligible Reels can be shown to a small audience of non-followers, then considered for broader recommendation based on response. That is a general description, not a promised sequence or a view threshold.

A small first audience is not proof that your account is restricted. A Reel may simply be a weaker match for those viewers, or may not yet have found the people most interested in its subject. Look at several posts and their insights rather than drawing a conclusion from one upload.

How to make a Reel easier to understand and watch

Use this workflow before your next post:

  1. Choose one viewer and one point. For example, a Jaipur home baker sharing a 20-second cake decorating tip has a clearer subject than a Reel mixing recipes, travel and a sales pitch.
  2. Show the subject early. Open with the finished result, the question, or the useful moment. Avoid a long logo intro that delays the reason to watch.
  3. Make the video original and legible. Use footage you made or have permission to use. Keep text readable on a phone and avoid adding another app's watermark.
  4. Give the Reel a clear ending. A complete tip, reveal or story is more satisfying than an abrupt cut. Do not stretch it just to make it longer.
  5. Use audio with intent. Choose audio that supports the video. Trending audio is not a substitute for a clear idea, and Instagram does not promise that a trend will earn reach.
  6. Review the result after posting. Compare average watch time, reach, shares and saves in Insights with your own past Reels. Ask what viewers responded to, then test one change next time.

For an Indian audience, test language and context for the people you actually want to reach. If you are planning a broader channel routine, see our Instagram marketing guide. A creator serving local customers might try a Hindi or regional-language explanation, while a pan-India tutorial may work better in simple English or with captions. Treat these as audience choices, not algorithm hacks.

Check recommendation eligibility before diagnosing a reach drop

If you use a professional account, Instagram says Account Status can show whether your content may be eligible for recommendations. Eligibility means content may be recommended; it does not mean Instagram will recommend it. Review any specific issue shown there and follow Instagram's on-screen guidance.

Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines are separate from its Community Guidelines. Some content may remain on Instagram but not be eligible for recommendation to people who do not follow the account. Instagram's help pages also list characteristics that can lead to Reels being shown less often, including low-resolution or blurry video, watermarks, borders, muted clips, mostly text, and non-original videos.

Quick check: use a public account if discovery is your goal, review Account Status, and upload a clean, original video. Do not assume a reach change is a “shadowban” without checking the account's status and content eligibility.

What does not reliably improve Reel ranking?

There is no reliable public evidence that a fixed hashtag count, a particular posting minute, buying engagement, or copying a viral format ensures recommendation. Avoid advice that claims exact ranking weights or promises a specific view count. Instagram's own public material describes predictions and signals, not a creator-controlled formula.

Hashtags and captions can help people understand a topic, but they cannot rescue a video that is irrelevant to its intended viewer. Use a short, accurate caption and a few relevant topic cues rather than stuffing unrelated keywords.

A simple weekly review for creators

Once a week, compare a handful of recent Reels with similar topics and formats. Record the subject, opening, length, average watch time, reach, shares and saves. Compare each post with your own typical results, not an internet-wide benchmark.

Then make one deliberate adjustment: a more specific opening, clearer audio, tighter explanation, or a different language choice. If you change everything at once, you will not know what helped. Keep experiments small and continue only when the content remains useful to viewers.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram use one algorithm for Reels? No. Instagram says different parts of the app use different ranking systems. Reels recommendations are personalised to the viewer and are not the same as Feed ranking.

Does Instagram show Reels to non-followers? It may recommend eligible public Reels to people who do not follow the creator. Eligibility does not guarantee that a Reel will be recommended or reach a particular audience size.

Are watch time and shares important? Instagram's public explanation includes predictions about watching through and resharing. Their impact is not published as a fixed score, so use Insights to learn about your own audience rather than chasing a universal target.

Do hashtags make a Reel go viral? No hashtag count ensures reach or popularity. Use relevant words that accurately describe the Reel, and focus on making the video clear and worthwhile for its intended audience.

Why did my Reel get low views? Many reasons are possible, including audience interest, content eligibility and how well the Reel matches viewers' interests. Check Account Status and compare multiple Reels before deciding there is a restriction.

Can I post someone else's Reel with a watermark? Instagram says it may show less often Reels with watermarks or videos that are not original. Create original work or get permission to use material, and avoid presenting someone else's content as yours.

The takeaway

Instagram recommends Reels by estimating what each person may find relevant and entertaining. Make original, easy-to-follow videos for a specific audience, check recommendation eligibility, and use your own Insights to guide the next experiment.
