The 30 second version

Instagram has more control buttons than most people ever find. The best ones:

  • About this account shows when any account was created.
  • Restrict quietly limits a troll without them knowing.
  • Reset suggested content wipes your Explore, Reels and Feed suggestions.
  • You can edit a DM for 15 minutes after sending it.
  • Account Status tells you if your account can be recommended.

Menu names change between app versions; if a path below looks different, use the search bar in Settings.

Share this: bet your group chat knows fewer than five of these. Send it and find out.

1. About this account: spot fake and scam profiles

Open any profile, tap the three dots, then About this account. Instagram shows the date the account joined and, for certain accounts, the country it is based in and how many times the username has changed (Instagram Help Center).

Why it matters: a "brand" offering you a collab, or a "bank" in your DMs, that joined last week from another country after five username changes is a red flag. Check this before you pay anyone or share anything.

2. Restrict: the silent block

Blocking someone can escalate things. Restrict is quieter. When you restrict an account:

  • their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them
  • their messages move to message requests, and they cannot see when you have read them or when you are online

Swipe left on their comment or open their profile, tap the three dots and choose Restrict. They are not notified.

3. Hidden Words: filter abuse before you see it

Under Settings, Hidden Words, Instagram can automatically hide offensive comments and message requests, and you can add your own list of words, phrases and emojis to hide.

Since 2023 you can also use Hidden Words to tell Instagram to stop recommending content that contains those words (Meta announcement). Add a spoiler, a topic you are tired of, or a slur in your language.

4. Limits: survive a pile on

Went viral for the wrong reasons? Limits temporarily hides comments and message requests from accounts that do not follow you or only recently followed you, which is where most pile ons come from. You choose how long it lasts and can switch it off any time. Find it under Settings, Limit interactions.

5. Quiet mode: an away message for Instagram

Quiet mode pauses notifications, shows "In quiet mode" on your activity status, and auto replies to DMs to let people know you are away. Meta introduced it in 2023 as a way to focus during study or sleep (Meta announcement). Look for it under Settings, Notifications.

6. Reset suggested content: a fresh feed

If your Reels have been stuck on one topic for months, you can start over. Meta's steps: open your profile, tap the menu, choose Content preferences, then Reset suggested content, and confirm (Meta announcement).

Instagram then rebuilds your suggestions from what you interact with next, and prompts you to review accounts you follow. Your follows and saved posts are not deleted.

7. "Not interested", in bulk

You do not have to tap "Not interested" one post at a time. In Explore you can select several posts at once and mark them all, and Instagram says "Not interested" also shapes what you see in Reels and Search (Meta announcement).

8. Edit a DM after you send it

Typo in a message to a client? Since 2024 you can edit a sent DM for up to 15 minutes. Press and hold the message and tap Edit. The other person sees a small "Edited" label, but not what you changed (TechCrunch).

9. Pin your most important chats

Swipe left on a conversation, or press and hold it, and tap Pin. You can pin up to three one to one or group chats so they stay at the top of your inbox, which is useful for a business partner, a family group, or a brand you are working with.

10. Turn off read receipts

Do not want people to know you have seen their message? You can turn read receipts off for all chats in your messaging settings, or for one chat from its details. Look under Settings, Messages and story replies, Show read receipts.

11. Account Status: find out if you are being held back

Instead of guessing about "shadowbans", open Settings, Account Status. It shows whether any of your content was removed, whether your account currently has issues that affect recommendations, and lets you appeal decisions you think are wrong. Instagram points to this screen in its official ranking explainer.

Frequently asked questions

Does the other person know I restricted them? No. Instagram does not notify them. Their comments simply become visible only to them unless you approve them.

Can I see when someone made their Instagram account? Yes. Open their profile, tap the three dots, then About this account to see the date joined.

Does resetting suggestions unfollow everyone? No. It clears suggested content in Explore, Reels and Feed. Instagram prompts you to review follows, but nothing is unfollowed unless you choose to.

How do I check if an email really came from Instagram? In the app, go to Accounts Center, Password and security, and look for Emails from Instagram. It lists the security emails Instagram sent you in the last 14 days.

Why does a menu look different on my phone? Instagram tests layouts and moves settings between versions. Use the search bar at the top of Settings.
