Instagram Business vs Creator Account: Which Should You Pick?
Both are professional accounts with Insights and contact options. Business suits shops and services, Creator suits individuals. How to choose and switch.

The 30 second version
- Instagram has two professional account types: Business and Creator.
- Business is meant for shops, brands, local businesses, organisations and service providers.
- Creator is meant for individuals: influencers, artists, public figures and content makers.
- Both give you Insights, a professional dashboard, contact buttons and ads tools.
- Neither type gets more reach. Pick the one that matches who the account represents.
- Professional accounts cannot be private. Switching a private account makes it public.
What is the difference?
Both are "professional accounts", which means you get access to tools a personal account does not have: post and audience Insights, a category label, contact options and the ability to run ads from posts. The main difference is who Instagram designed each type for.
| Business account | Creator account | |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations, service providers | Influencers, artists, public figures, content creators |
| Insights and dashboard | Yes | Yes |
| Contact buttons and category label | Yes | Yes |
| Ads and boosted posts | Yes | Yes |
| Link with a Facebook Page and Meta Business Suite | Yes, and it suits business tools | Possible, but business tools fit Business accounts better |
| Music library | Can be limited, because licensed music is for non-commercial use | Generally the wider music library |
The music point catches many small businesses out. Instagram's licensed music is meant for personal, non-commercial use, so some business accounts see fewer songs. Our guide on using trending music in business Reels explains what that means in practice.
Which one should you pick?
Start with a simple question: does this account represent a business or a person?
- Choose Business for a shop, restaurant, clinic, salon, agency, brand or any account that customers contact to buy something. It fits naturally with Meta Business Suite, shopping features and booking or ordering buttons.
- Choose Creator if the account is about you and your work: your videos, your art, your opinions. It fits influencers who work with brands, musicians, coaches and public personalities.
A founder who posts about their own life and also runs a shop may want two accounts: a Business account for the shop and a Creator account for the founder. That is cleaner than trying to make one account do both jobs.
Does one type get more reach?
No. Instagram has not said that either professional type is favoured in Feed, Reels or Explore, and switching type is not a growth hack. What changes reach is the content and how people respond to it. For the signals Instagram itself names, see what the Instagram algorithm really ranks.
Things to know before you switch
- Your account becomes public. Professional accounts cannot be private. If your personal account is private, switching makes all your posts visible, and pending follow requests are accepted.
- Some features have their own rules. Monetisation tools such as subscriptions or gifts have separate eligibility rules, so the account type alone does not unlock them.
- Contact details are optional. You choose whether to show an email, phone number or address. Do not display a personal phone number unless you are comfortable with it being public.
- Going back to personal is possible, but you lose Insights history access and some tools, and a linked Facebook Page is disconnected.
How to switch account type
- Go to your profile and open the menu (three lines).
- Open Settings and activity.
- Look for Account type and tools (under the section for professionals).
- Tap Switch to professional account, or Switch account type if you already have one.
- Choose Business or Creator, pick a category and follow the steps.
The exact menu names change between app versions. If you cannot find them, search "account type" in the settings search bar.
After you switch
Use Insights to learn which posts bring profile visits and follows, not just likes. Fill in your category and a clear bio, add your links, and pin posts that introduce you. If you want a head start on the follower count while you build content, you can look at our Instagram growth services, but the account type and a clear profile are what make visitors trust you.
