Can You Edit an Instagram Caption After Posting?
Yes. You can add, change or delete a caption on a post you already shared, without losing likes or comments. Here is how, and what you cannot change.

The 30 second version
- Yes. Open the post, tap the three dots, tap Edit, change the caption and tap Done.
- Likes, comments, views and saves stay the same after an edit.
- You can also add a caption to a post that had none, or remove the caption completely.
- The photo or video itself generally cannot be swapped once shared. Fix the text, do not repost.
- Read the whole caption again before saving. It is easy to fix one typo and add another.
How to edit a caption in the app
- Go to your profile and open the post.
- Tap the three dots in the top corner.
- Tap Edit.
- Change, add or delete the caption text.
- Tap Done (or the tick) to save.
On a computer, open the post on instagram.com, click the three dots and choose Edit. The steps are almost the same.
There is no time limit. You can edit a caption a day or a year after posting.
What else can you change after posting?
| Can be changed | Cannot usually be changed |
|---|---|
| Caption text, including hashtags and mentions | The main photo or video |
| Tagged people | The order of a single image post into a carousel |
| Location | The original posting date |
| Alt text (in advanced settings) | Comments left by other people (you can only delete or hide them) |
For carousels, Instagram has at times allowed deleting a single photo from the set, but you cannot replace an image with a new one. If the visual itself is wrong, you have to decide between leaving it, archiving it or posting a corrected version.
Should you delete and repost instead?
Usually not. Deleting removes every like, comment, save and share the post has collected. A repost starts from zero and looks like a duplicate to your followers. If the problem is in the text, edit the text.
Repost only if the photo or video itself contains a serious mistake, such as a wrong price on the image, a wrong phone number or something that should not be public.
Does editing a caption hurt reach?
Instagram has not said that editing a caption reduces distribution, and editing is a normal, supported action. Most of a post's reach usually happens in its first hours or days anyway, so an edit a week later will not change much either way. Do not keep editing a post again and again hoping to "refresh" it; that is not how ranking works.
A checklist before you save the edit
- Names, dates, prices, addresses and phone numbers are correct.
- Any offer mentioned is still valid. If it has expired, say so or remove it.
- Mentions point to the right accounts.
- If it is a paid partnership, the ad disclosure is still clear. Our guide to paid collabs and the ad label in India explains why that matters.
- The caption still matches what is in the photo or video.
Why the Edit option might be missing
- You opened the post from a different account, or you are logged into the wrong account.
- It is someone else's post that only tags you. You can remove the tag, but not edit their caption.
- The app needs an update. Update it and try again, or try from instagram.com.
- It is a Collab post where you are the invited co-author. Usually the account that created the post controls the caption.
Good captions are worth the fix
A clear caption helps people understand your post and decide whether to follow, save or message you. If you are tidying up older posts, start with the ones pinned to your profile and your best performing Reels, since those are what new visitors see first. Will editing a caption remove my likes? No. Likes, comments, views and saves are kept.
Can I add hashtags after posting? Yes. Edit the caption and add them. They work the same as hashtags added when posting.
Can my followers see that I edited the caption? There is no edit history shown to other people on normal posts.
Can I edit a Reel caption? Yes. Open the Reel, tap the three dots and choose Edit, the same as for a photo post.
Is there a limit on how many times I can edit? There is no published limit, but there is rarely a reason to edit the same caption more than once or twice.
