Can a Business Use Trending Music in Instagram Reels?

Not automatically. Instagram's licensed music is for personal use, and Reels using it cannot be boosted. Here is what audio a business can safely use.

The 30 second version

  • Instagram's licensed music library is meant for personal, non-commercial use.
  • Many business accounts see a limited music library for exactly that reason.
  • A song showing up in the music picker does not mean your business is licensed to use it in promotion.
  • Reels with licensed popular music cannot be boosted as ads.
  • Safe options: Meta's royalty free Sound Collection, your own original audio, or music you have properly licensed.

Why your business account has fewer songs

Many small business owners notice that a song they hear everywhere on Reels does not appear for them. That is not a bug. Meta's music guidelines say the licensed music on Instagram is intended for personal, non-commercial use, and to support that, some business accounts and some types of posts have restricted access. Availability also varies by country.

This is also why a creator or personal account can use a track that you cannot. The difference is the account's purpose, not its size.

Can you boost a Reel with licensed music?

No. Meta does not let you boost Reels that use licensed music from the library. It recommends original audio or royalty free audio instead. If there is any chance you will want to promote a Reel later, choose cleared audio while editing. Swapping the track afterwards often ruins the timing of cuts and transitions.

What audio a business can use

  • Meta Sound Collection. Meta's library of royalty free tracks and sound effects. Meta says it can be used in videos on Facebook and Instagram, including commercial use and ads. You can often reach it from the Reels audio picker or the Music sticker.
  • Original audio. Voiceover, a product demonstration, the sound of your kitchen or workshop. Original sound often feels more real than a borrowed song.
  • Licensed music. A track bought from a stock music library with a licence that covers social media, commercial use and paid promotion.
  • Commissioned music. A short jingle made for you, with written agreement on usage rights.

Sound Collection clearance applies to Meta's platforms. If you want the same video on a website, YouTube or TV, check that the licence covers those too.

Ride the trend without the song

You can still join trends without using the exact audio:

  • Copy the format of a trend (the joke structure, the transition style, the "day in the life" pattern) with original or cleared audio.
  • Use a voiceover that explains your product while the visuals follow the trend.
  • Use text on screen and captions, since many people watch Reels with the sound off anyway.

A quick rights checklist

  1. Is the account personal, creator or business?
  2. Is this Reel promoting a product, an offer or a paid partnership?
  3. Where did the audio come from: picker, Sound Collection, your own, or bought?
  4. Will you boost it or use it elsewhere later?
  5. Save a note of the track name, source and licence date.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not find popular songs on my business account? Instagram restricts its licensed music for some business accounts because that music is for personal, non-commercial use.

Should I switch to a Creator account to get more music? Only if the account genuinely represents you as a person. Switching does not give a business a commercial licence for the music.

Is Meta Sound Collection free for business use? Meta describes it as royalty free and usable for commercial purposes on Facebook and Instagram, including ads.

What happens if I use music without permission? The audio may be muted, the Reel may be blocked or removed, and repeated problems can lead to account restrictions.

Can I boost a Reel with trending music? No. Reels with licensed music from the library cannot be boosted. Use original or royalty free audio if you plan to promote it.
