Do You Need 10,000 Followers to Add a Link to an Instagram Story?
No. The old 10K swipe-up rule ended in 2021. Every account can now use the Link sticker, with a few exceptions. Here is how to add one and make people tap it.

The 30 second version
- You do not need 10,000 followers to add a link to a Story.
- The 10K rule belonged to the old swipe up feature. In 2021 Instagram replaced it with the Link sticker and opened it to all accounts.
- Instagram said new accounts and accounts that repeatedly break its rules may not get the sticker.
- Add it from the sticker tray, paste your URL and place it where it is easy to tap.
- A link only works if the Story gives people a reason to tap and the page delivers what you promised.
Where the 10,000 follower idea came from
For years, only verified accounts or accounts above a follower threshold (widely known as 10,000) could add a swipe up link to a Story. Smaller accounts had to write "link in bio". That is why so much older advice still mentions the number.
In 2021 Instagram moved to the Link sticker and announced that link sharing in Stories was expanding to everyone, regardless of follower count. If you are trying to reach 10K only to unlock Story links, you can stop: the threshold no longer applies.
Why your account might not see the Link sticker
Instagram named a few groups that may not have access:
- Newly created accounts. Give the account some time and normal activity.
- Accounts that repeatedly share content against Instagram's Community Guidelines, such as hate speech, misinformation or spam.
If the sticker is missing, update the app first, then check Account Status in settings for any restrictions. Gaining followers will not fix a restriction. Never use another person's login or a third party app to get around it.
How to add a link to a Story
- Open the Story camera and take or choose a photo or video.
- Tap the sticker icon at the top.
- Choose Link.
- Paste the full URL. You can usually customise the sticker text, for example "See the menu".
- Tap Done, then drag the sticker to a clear spot and resize it if needed.
- Share the Story.
Open the link yourself from the published Story to make sure it goes to the right page.
How to get more people to tap
| Do this | Avoid this |
|---|---|
| Tell people exactly what opens: "Book your slot", "Full price list" | Vague text like "Click here" |
| Link to the exact product, form or article | Sending everyone to your homepage |
| Put the sticker in the middle of the screen, away from the edges | Hiding it at the very top or bottom where the app controls sit |
| Use a short series: show the product, then the link | One cold Story with only a link |
| Use a page that loads fast on mobile data | A slow page with pop ups before the content |
Do not write "link in bio" when the Story already has a sticker; it confuses people. And do not promise a discount or prize on the sticker unless the page clearly gives it.
How to know if the link worked
In your Story insights you can see link taps (sometimes shown as sticker taps). Compare that with the number of people who saw the Story. On your website, a tagged link (for example with UTM parameters) lets you see how many visits and sales came from that Story.
Judge by the result you care about. For a booking Story, count bookings, not views. One Story is not a fair test; compare several similar Stories over a few weeks.
Bigger audience, more taps
The sticker is open to everyone, but more Story viewers still means more possible taps. Build that audience with consistent Stories, replies to every DM and Reels that bring new people to your profile. If you want a specific Story seen by more people, our Instagram story views service can add views, though only real interested viewers will tap a link.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 10K swipe up rule still in place? No. It was replaced by the Link sticker, which Instagram opened to all accounts in 2021.
Why can I not see the Link sticker? Your account may be new or restricted. Update the app and check Account Status in settings.
Can I add more than one link in a Story? Each Story frame normally carries one Link sticker. Use separate Story frames for different links.
Can I add a link to a Story for Close Friends only? Yes. Choose Close Friends when sharing. Only people on that list will see the Story and the link.
Do Story links hurt reach? Instagram has not said so. Some creators believe link Stories get fewer views, but there is no official statement, so test with your own audience.
